Born in Togo in 1969, Hélène Amouzou went into exile at the age of twenty-three. She passed through Germany, where she gave birth to her daughter, before arriving in Belgium in October 1997. There began a life of struggle, until she obtained her residence permit in 2009, before becoming a Belgian citizen in 2015. In 2004, Hélène Amouzou moved to Molenbeek-Saint-Jean - where she lived at the time - to take classes in video and photography at the local Académie de Dessin et des Arts visuels. Although she initially felt uneasy about the theme of self-portraiture, she gradually returned to it two years later, to devote herself fully to it. Her technique remains the same: silver photography, mainly in black and white.
