In late 2018, Zanele Muholi commissioned 25 emerging artists to perform works from her Somnyama Ngonyama series of self-portraits, a project that challenges the social ills of race, gender and sexuality politics faced by South Africans and global citizens alike.

The IKHONO LASENATALI project also commemorates 25 years of democracy, with most of the commissioned artists belonging to the post apartheid generation.
