LEILA ROSE FANNER, LINDOKUHLE KHUMALO, MORGAN MAHAPE & ZANELE MUHOLI
For just over a decade, the South African art scene has been arguably the richest and most dynamic on the African continent and of major importance to the art world.
Due to the political context of South Africa, black artists have been ignored for too long. The Maison des Arts has chosen to give a voice to four of them:
Leila Rose Fanner, Lindokuhle Khumalo, Morgan Mahape and Zanele Muholi.
Each year, the Maison des Arts ("House of Arts") located in Antony (Paris’ suburbs - France), exhibits contemporary artists from one specific country to cultivate the curiosity of its visitors. So far, they have had the chance to exhibit North African arts, and they wanted to extend our eyes to the rest of Africa, and more particularly to South Africa. They believe the importance, liveliness, and quality of contemporary South African art would be particularly appealing to the visitors.
The exhibitions are designed around the creation of a dialogue between cultures and arts. As such, the Maison des Arts ("House of Arts") offers several events that give another dimension to the exhibition: two guided tours, two family workshops, a reading time for families, one conference, and one live event linked to traditional South African culture (e.g., music, dance). The exhibition and events are offered for free to promote access to art and culture.
