Carole Kvasnevski Gallery invites you to the exhibition ZEMIDJAN by Yao Metsoko from 06 to 30 November 2017. Yao Metsoko Franco-Togolese artist will present a series of works specially made for the gallery. Zemidjan which means "take me away quickly" or "take me abruptly" in Fon, the language of southern Benin. The zem is a motorbike taxi that originated in Benin before the 90s and after the 90s, following strikes from 1992 to 1993, allowed them to develop and impose themselves in Togo in the face of classic 4-wheel taxis. Cheap and practical day and night, on roads or paths, where no one else can go, the "Zem" symbolises the freedom that nothing is impossible in the face of adversity, braving dangers but also proving to be a major cause of accidents and deaths.
Yao Metsoko transports on his zems the daily life of the Togolese population on an acidic journey, an ubiquitous tale where sensuality, absurdity and humour are mixed; but which also describes the difficult conditions of a life in reality ordinary and far from exoticism and adventure...
