IBRAHIM BALLO
DONNE LA PAROLE
21/01 - 25/02 2023
Galerie Carole Kvasnevski presents "Donne la parole" by visual artist Ibrahim Ballo.
Restitution exhibition of Ibrahim Ballo's residency in Marseille from October 17 to December 13, 2022 at the Centre Montévidéo in association with the Pernod Ricard Foundation and the Sahm Workshops in Brazzaville.
Ibrahim Ballo weaves textiles on canvas, inspired in particular by the Malian women of his Sénoufo community. Through his travels and experiences, the artist combines different threads, techniques and symbols in his works.
"Donne la Parole" is the result of two months of research at the Centre Montévidéo in Marseille, a new stage in a work that the artist has been working on for several years. Colourful works mixing warmth, delicacy, beauty and intimacy, beyond the simple portrait.
Since 2019, Ibrahim Ballo has been integrating cotton canvas into Jean. Denim, which is very present in Mali, allows him to unfold stories that intersect, link, influence, challenge and respond to each other. Indeed, as the bearer of a multi-layered history, cotton conveys stories of circulation, migration and appropriation.
Ibrahim Ballo subtly evokes oppression, marginalisation and inequality. Ballo's Esprit Bavar highlights those whose voices do not count, who are not heard even if they can speak.

Ibrahim Ballo, born in 1986, lives and works in Bamako. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts at the Balla Fasseké Kouyaté Conservatory in Bamako under the direction of Salia Malé and Abdoulaye Konaté in 2017, in Mali.
His plastic approach is based on the weaving of paintings, inspired by the women of his community in the rural Sénoufo region of Mali, who weave cotton for clothing. Creating his own traces in the wake of his master Abdoulaye Konaté, Ibrahim invents a unique, original and transcendent visual writing.
In 2022, Ibrahim Ballo won the Segou'Art Festival Prize. In 2020, he is the winner of the residency programme of the French Institute at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Ibrahim Ballo is also an active member of the Tim'arts and Sanou'art collectives in Bamako. His work is part of several collections, including the OLYM Collection.
From 17 October to 16 December 2022, the artist has been awarded a residency at the Centre d'art Montévidéo in Marseille, France in association with the Pernod Ricard Foundation and the Ateliers Sahm in Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo. "Donne la parole" at the Galerie Carole Kvasnevski is the result of this residency in Paris.
